Discovery does not require any technical keys to be installed or applied. Once a customer has purchased and installed the full version (not the free community edition that has some technical limitations), the core functions of BMC Discovery are enabled. However, at the time of purchase the customer will have signed a license agreement as to the number of OSIs (Operating System Instances) that they are allowed to scan in their estate. This is a discussion that should be had between the customer and the sales/account representative.
The Standard license entitlements, restrictions, and units of measurement Documentation says:
"BMC Discovery does not use a license management system, but it provides a license management page which enables you to opt-in to cloud discovery, monitor your license usage for on-premises discovery and cloud discovery, and to see the status (whether or not it is installed, and if installed, which version) of Storage discovery and the Extended Data Pack. For more information, see Managing licenses."
Other items to note:
- If a host is discovered by multiple scanners, it still uses just one license. The same applies to a consolidator that has pushed data from a scanner: the same host is found on both, but still uses just one license.
- Network devices, printers, and other network-connected devices do not count as a license.
- Desktop OSIs (specifically, Windows desktops such as Windows 10 Home / Professional) do not count towards licensing totals.
- The Storage Discovery option is licensed separately and cannot be downloaded without entitlement.
- The Cloud Discovery option is licensed separately and needs to be turned on explicitly via the UI.
- A host in the cloud can either consume a cloud license or a host license, but never both.
For more information on how license counts are calculated, see Discovery: How licenses are calculated in Administration > Licensing? Knowledge Article.
The license entitlement is subject to change.
