How to upgrade Relays and Clients to the new version once master server is upgraded?
Once the master is upgraded to the new version, there are two ways to upgrade the relays and clients. 1. Upgrade the agents automatically 2. Manual upgrade with the operational rules
1) Upgrade the agents automatically:
With the setting 'Automatic Agent version Upgrade', BMC Client Management agents on relays and clients can be automatically upgraded. To ensure that the automatic upgrade is defined before running the master upgrade, do the following (by default, automatic upgrading is disabled):
Open the Global Settings > System Variables node in the console.
Navigate to the Connection Management tab.
Check that the option 'Automatic Agent Version Upgrade' is set to 'Yes'.
If it is set to No, double-click the respective line in the table.
The Properties window opens. Check the box for this parameter.
The automatic agent upgrade is instantly activated. The next time the agents upload their identity to their parent, they are upgraded immediately, if an upgrade is available.
This option is also available during the master upgrade. While updating the master, the window shown below appears. Check the box to automatically update the agents.
2) Manual upgrade with the operational rules:
If the 'automatic upgrade' option is deactivated, agents can be manually updated using the operating rules. These operational rules are placed under below folders.
Client Management OneOff (If master is updated with the patch)
Client Management Upgrade (If the master is upgraded with major version.
Note: Client Management Oneoff rules can be used till the version 20.08. Since 21.02, the BCM patch is also included with the upgrade packages, thus Client Management upgrade rules must be used.
In order to upgrade devices with operational rules, follow the steps outlined below:
Go to the Operational Rules > Client Management Upgrade node and select the operational rule to upgrade the agents. ( In case the patch is applied, go to Operational Rules > Client Management OneOff, follow this article to update agents manually with the patch)
for example: Win32Upgrade for agents on 32-bit Windows devices Win64Upgrade for all agents installed on 64-bit Windows systems. Linux32Upgrade for agents on 32-bit Linux devices Linux64Upgrade for all agents installed on 64-bit Linux systems. MaxOsXUpgrade for agents on any version of MAC operating system.
Go to the Assigned Objects > Devices/Device Groups
Assign devices or the device groups created according to the OS architecture. To create the device groups based on the OS architecture, refer this document
When the assignment process is finished and the upgrade package has arrived at the targets, the rule is executed and the agents are upgraded.
To verify if the agent on these devices is upgraded, go to the device node, either in the Device Topology or in a device group and select the device's General tab.
The attributes 'Agent Version Major' and 'Agent Version Minor' should display the values 20 and 08 (If they are upgraded to 20.08) now. If the hotfix is applied, the Agent Revision number should have increased by one.
