Why do I get only partial response in my BBI-SS Journal to some IMS commands that produce multi-segment response?

IMS is marking some multi-segment command-responses as ‘system-message-segment’ and not as ‘command-response’. Only the first segments of this response are received when message suppression to MTO is active.

Answer

Several IMS commands produce multi-segment response (e.g. ‘/SSR *DIS THD(*)’ or ‘/RST LINK ALL’) that is marked by IMS as ‘IMS system message segment’ and not as ‘Command response segment’, as indicated by bit flag AOE0FLG2=X’08’ for each segment. When message suppression to IMS Master Terminal Operator (MTO) is active, only the major (1^st) segment of the response will be sent to the MainView AutoOPERATOR for IMS exit routine (DFSAOUE0 or DFSAOE00), whereas the subsequent segments will be lost. This happens because MainView AutoOPERATOR for IMS was instructed to suppress system messages, thus, when the major segment is received, it is marked for suppression, and all subsequent segments are cancelled.
There are two ways in which MTO message suppression is activated in MainView AutoOPERATOR for IMS:

Setting “Display at Dest =NO” as Action Specification in the IMS Generic Rule.
When MainView AutoOPERATOR for IMS detects that the IMS MTO is inoperable.

When method #1 is used, you can apply the following solution to receive the full response to the command:

Exclude the major segment of the multi-segment command-response from the IMS generic rule by using variable-dependency. For example: 'WORD1 NE DSNV401I'.
Add another IMS(a) event type rule for the same major segment with the following specifications:
- Selection Criteria:
  - Text ID...............: major segment message id (e.g. DSNV401I)
  - MLSEG Minor....: ALL
- Actions:
  - Journal...............: YES
Re-issue the command and make sure you get the full multi-segment response.

When running with inoperable MTO, the full command-response cannot be received. This is because MTO suppression is automatically activated to avoid queuing messages to an inoperable MTO. In this case, if you want to receive the full multi-segment response to the command, you will need to activate your MTO. You can still suppress messages to MTO as before by using method #1 above.
